CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - The bridge that carries State Road 46 over the Eel River in rural Clay County, Indiana will likely re-open by November 4, officials with the Indiana Department of Transportation said Friday.
Officials closed the bridge in July after inspectors found corrosion on the structural steel t hat holds up the bridge. It was the second closure of the bridge for safety reasons in two years.
Initially, engineers had hoped to re-open the bridge to traffic by Halloween.
Businesses near the closure said they have seen a drop in traffic because of the closure, but they also said they have often received visitors asking directions. One business said they even printed up maps showing the official detour around the bridge.
