SR 46 bridge to open in October

CLAY COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - The bridge that carries State Road 46 over the Eel River in Clay County, Indiana may not re-open to traffic until late October, a spokeswoman for the Indiana Department of Transportation announced Friday.

Officials first closed the bridge to traffic in July, after inspectors reported finding corrosion on the bridge’s steel support structure. This is the second time the bridge has been closed for safety reasons in one year.

Planners said they expect repair work on the bridge to finish by late October, when traffic over the bridge can resume.

In the meantime, they encourage drivers who would use S.R. 46 to detour along S.R. 59 and S.R. 246.
