Storm Rocks So. In

VINCENNES, IND. (WTHI) -       A southern Indiana city tries to put the pieces back together after a powerful thunderstorm ripped buildings apart and sent trees crashing everywhere.

     At least one dozen families had their homes badly damaged by the high winds that roared through Vincennes Sunday night.

     Despite the damage some of those hit the hardest consider themselves lucky.

     Miranda Krohn was taking cell phone of the video of Sunday evening's storm as it rolled into the Autumn Ridge apartments, when suddenly the roof just over her head was ripped off and thrown to the ground.

     "It was scary, like trying to get out of there," said Krohn.  "We were on the third floor which was on the top story and that's right where the roof came off."

     Fortunately, Krohn and her children were unhurt.

     In fact no one was injured at the apartment complex.

     An equally frightening event happened on South 16th Street where a huge tree limb cut the Morgan's mobile home in two.

          "When they was coming towards the front another tree fell on it and it pinned my little girl beneath the tree and the trailer and my wife was alright, but I was scared I lost them because i couldn't hear nothing," said Charles Morgan.  "I couldn't see nothing."

     Even after being trapped under the massive tree limb little 10 year old Meagan managed to make it out of that trailer with only scrapes and bruises.

     "Someone was looking over us when that tree fell," said Morgan.  "I can say that."

     What the rest of the community can say is the storm left a whale of a mess.

     Street crews have been working overtime to just get all of the roadways cleared of the downed limbs.

     "We certainly had a lot of trees down this time, all over town," said Street Superintendent Bryce Anderson.  "Normally, you can see a pattern where the wind went through town, but this covered the whole city."

     A storm that left much of the city in a mess, but somehow managed not to leave any serious injuries behind.

     The powerful winds associated with the storm brought down hundreds of trees and limbs and a lot of power lines with them.

     Right after the storm the utility reported that as many as 9,000 customers had lost power.

     By late Monday afternoon, that number had been reduced to about 1,000.

     Crews are still out trying the clear trees and get all of the electricity restored.
