DNR reminding hunters to be safe after a hunter was killed

VINCENNES, IND. (WTHI) - Deer season had barely begun before Indiana suffered its first fatality.

Authorities report a 28 year old man was shot and killed while walking with a 12-year-old during the youth hunting period over the weekend.

The accident happened near Rochester in northern Indiana, but the death serves as a reminder for all hunters to think safety as they head for the woods.

Archery season for deer has begun and thousands of hunters are heading to the woods hoping to bag one.

Indiana Department of Natural Resources Conservation Officers say don't let the excitement of the hunt get in the way of safety.

"Always identify your game," said Officer Joe Haywood. "It seems like anytime we do have accidents, a lot of times they don't identify the games. They hear a sound or they see movement and they just shoot at it."

Indiana's archery season does not normally have as many injuries as happen during the gun season which opens on November 17th, still there are accidents.

The key word of course for hunters is safety and officials say one of the most dangerous parts of the hunting season has nothing to do with weapons.

"One of the most common accidents we have are tree stand accidents," said Haywood. "It's not firearm related at all, so from that aspect of it always wear your safety harness."

Other simple reminders for the season are always hunt on land where you are welcome, let someone know where you are going and when you expect to return.

Archery season in Indiana has been extended to January 6th.

Officials say that is one of several changes in the laws in Indiana this year that include the addition of a cross-bow season.
