VINCENNES, IND. (WTHI) -      A southern Indiana community takes a step toward possibly building a new pool.

Monday night the Vincennes Park Board and City Council passed a joint resolution calling for the community to vote on a plan for a pool to replace Rainbow Beach.

After a lengthy planning and design process the project is now headed to the ballot box.

The old Rainbow Beach Pool in Vincennes has been a recreation center for the community in the past, but it's now closed with no plans to re-open.

"Right now, our pool will be closed for the season because of the rips in the liner and the cost to repair that," said Vincennes Mayor Joe Yochum.

Parks officials had anticipated the pool was near its end and have a plan for a new facility with a lot of of the features the public asked for.

"We've had meetings for almost the last year working on the design and everything on the project," said Yochum.

Now officials will put the proposal up for a vote in a special election.

The city has already received a donation to cover the cost of the referendum.

Now the question remains will the voters support the project.

"That's going to come down to the voters to decide whether they want this pool," said Yochum.

A vote that will determine whether the community stays dry in the summer or will be able to have a new day at the beach in the future.

If the referendum passes in May the resolution allows the city to sell up to $3.8-million in bonds to pay for the project.
