WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTHI) - A southern Indiana community beats the heat of the hottest day of the year in a cool way. "Waterworld’ of Washington was filled with kids and adults as the city had a free swim day.

The cool water was a respite from the high heat and humidity that gripped southern Indiana.

City officials say the free day was about giving people a safe place to cool down.

"My big concern is the kids, the parents and the babysitters. They have a safe place to go to keep cool and that's why we made it free today. Open it up to the public," said Larry Haag, the mayor of Washington, Indiana

Officials say the free swim day was also a way to show some appreciation to the community.

The pool and splash facility was built 2 years ago and the public donated more than a half million dollars toward the construction.
