INDIANAPOLIS (WTHI) - The Indianapolis Fire Department says a 7-year-old child is dead and five people were sent to the hospital after a fire in the 1800 block of West Washington Street.
IFD says 16 people were inside the residence at the time of the fire, which broke out shortly after 3:30 a.m. Saturday morning. Firefighters say there were no working smoke detectors in the residence.
Officials say four people jumped out of windows to escape the flames. One person was injured and one firefighter suffered burns to his face and legs. One 7-year-old boy was killed in the incident.
The boy's parents jumped from the second floor and alerted firefighters to his location. The mother told officials she tried to get the boy out of the window with her, but was unable to maintain her hold on him due to intense heat and heavy black smoke.
A one-year-old baby was believed to be trapped inside the home, but was found OK outside the building with her mother.
The Indy Fire Rescue House is organizing an assistance fund for the family of the 7-year-old that passed away in this incident. The funds will go towards burial and funeral services. The organization will also be working with other local relief agencies to help other victims with their specific needs.
The names of the victims have not yet been released. We will bring you updates on WTHITV.com as more information becomes available.
