Woman's body found near Oaktown

OAKTOWN, Ind. (WTHI) - Southern Indiana police try to piece together the puzzling death of an Oaktown woman.

The Knox County Sheriff's Department reports 27-year-old Jonna Winemiller's body was found along a rural road south of Oaktown.

The case that began as a missing person report is now a death investigation.

Police blocked off old US 41 south of Oaktown.

Authorities and family members had been looking for days for Jonna Winemiller in the area, before a body was spotted by someone passing by.

"Family members had been searching for her all day yesterday, Sunday morning, Monday," said Knox County Sheriff Mike Morris. "Sheriff's Deputies responded there last night, continued the search."

Police quickly cordoned off a large area, keeping the media far from the scene.

The roadblocks went up within minutes after the body was discovered.

"She was located just off the roadway," said Morris. "Just south of town off old U.S. 41 in a wooded area."

Police say they are still trying to sort out the details of the case.

They say Winemiller's body was found just about a half mile from where she had last been seen.

"The death is suspicious in nature and the investigation is continuing," said Morris.

Authorities say they conducted several searches in connection with Winemiller's death and questioned a lot of people, but so far there have been no arrests and the case remains wide open.

An autopsy is scheduled for Wednesday afternoon in Vincennes.
