Smoking ban issued for an Indiana National Historical Park

VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) - National Historical Park officials in Vincennes, IN have issued a smoking ban on all park grounds at George Rogers Clark National Historical Park ( GRC ).

The dry, hot weather has been impacting the area, making leaves and grass more brittle and dry, which, in turn, makes them more susceptible to quickly catching fire.

Brian McCutchen, Superintendent of the GRC stated that the move is an unprecedented action for GRC; however, due to the dangers created by the dry weather, officials feel it is better to stop potential risks now.

The GRC park includes the Memorial grounds between the Lincoln Memorial Bridge and the park maintenance facility just south of Willow Street, the Patrick Henry Square unit, which extends from the Regions Bank on Vigo Street westward to the Wabash River, and the grass areas in front of the Old Cathedral and associated buildings.

McCutchen also addressed the issue of patrons visiting the park for the 4th of July firework celebration that happens just off the park premise.

Fireworks have always been banned from the park.

Park officials hope to allow patrons to enjoy the display without the increase danger through the use of fireworks, sparklers or smoking items.

The smoking ban will remain in effect until further notice.
