VERMILLION CO., Ind. (WTHI) - After the deadly shootings at Sandy Hook Elementary, many schools all across the country looked into ways to better school safety.
Dave Chapman, Superintendent of South Vermillion Community Schools says he immediately reviewed his emergency policies after he heard about the school shootings in Connecticut.
Chapman says years ago shootings weren't at the forefront but that's no longer the case and changes need to happen.
Chapman mentioned in order to make changes, schools need money set aside from either the government or the state just like fire protection funds, so they can better protect students against an intruder.
"You have to realize the age of our buildings and a good large percentage of our buildings were built during a time when this wasn't a top priority issue. So we have to look at how we can better equip our facilities to be more prepared to deal with those types of threats,” said Chapman.
Chapman says his staff and the Vermillion County Sheriff's Department met with him Monday to discuss possible future school safety changes.
