TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Its outdoor camping with a twist on time: a vintage camper rally; a group of campers with a love of retro campsites.
The mid morning chirping of birds rings out across Fowler Park. It's the soundtrack to the summer time for campers, like Roger Dulin of Brazil. The sounds of nature made him a camper years ago.
"When I was growing up we had a couple pop-up (campers) and I pulled a couple of pop-ups to California back in the seventies,” Dulin said.
In the early 90's, he and his wife Erin fixed up a vintage camper. But, after restoring that one camper, he says the hobby took hold of him
"It gets in your blood, we call it aluminitis, because once you get one of these aluminum campers you can't stop at one,” Dulin said.
That’s why Dulin started the Southern Indiana Vintage Trailer Rally. An event for folks with a love of retro camp trailers and antiques to camp out for a weekend together; and judging from number of folks at the rally, its contagious.
The way some of the old campers are restored, one step inside is like taking a step back in time. From the original stove top to its original cabinets, Roger Dulin's camper has been restored right to its original calendar year.
The vintage camper rally giving old trailers new life in the modern park.
