TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Just by taking a walk this fall, people can help those affected by autism.

Registration is underway for the Terre Haute Walk Now for Autism Speaks event in September.

The event brings awareness to the disorder that affects one out of 110 children born in the U.S.

An open house at Regional Hospital on Saturday encouraged folks to form walking teams and raise money for research.

Organizers also emphasized the need to support families with autistic loved ones.

"As family members, this is a huge thing for us. It's kind of our support group. It's kind of letting us know we're not alone. We're out there fighting for a cure," said Carol Crawn with Autism Now.

The walk day is Saturday September 25 at the Vigo County Fairgrounds.
