Protecting from burst water lines

TERRE HAUTE, IND. (WTHI) - As the temperatures drop into the teens overnight, cold pipes can cause disasters for your home.

Plumbing experts say at 20 degrees and below, homeowners should be concerned about the pipes that line their houses.

They say plumbing in exterior walls is vulnerable to cold. Unfortunately, these are the pipes you can’t see.

Mobile and modular homes could also have cold weather issues.

B&S plumbing workers in Terre Haute say that a small crack could bring a big hassle.

“Well it could flood your house for one…[You may] go out of town and leave your heat way down…[If] you have some plumbing lines on the outside walls that are not getting proper heat, it could crack a line…There’s no valve, so it’s just going to flood your house,” said Luke Stewart from B&S Plumbing

Burst water lines can cost thousands of dollars to repair.

Stewart says it’s better to make a service call if you suspect a problem than risk a home disaster.
