Preparing for emergencies

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - While the recent bout of severe storms has passed, the risk posed by deadly weather remains.

That makes it all the more important to prepare for disasters, emergency workers say.

“We like to say that if you’re prepared for one kind of disaster, you’re prepared for almost every disaster,” said J.D. Kesler, Deputy Director of the Vigo County Emergency Management Agency.

Among the ways to prepare, Kesler recommends keeping a disaster kit with supplies to last 72 hours.

Such kits typically include non-perishable food, water, flashlights with batteries, a whistle, a first aid kit and a battery-operated radio.

Kesler also recommends taking photos of your home inside and out before disasters occur for insurance purposes.

He recommends making copies of important documents like deeds and insurance policies, keeping the copies at home and putting the originals in a safe location like a safe deposit box.
