Standoff in Linton ends; suspect is in custody

LINTON, Ind. (WTHI) - Early Friday morning, Linton City Police responded to the residence of a suspect allegedly involved in an earlier altercation, which two people suffered lacerations from knives in downtown Linton, IN.

Upon arrival to the residence at SE 3rd St., the suspect involved in the earlier knife fight, refused to cooperate with officers, and proceeded to barricade himself inside the home with his three children, ages 10, 12 and 14.

Around 6:00 a.m., the suspect sent his 10-year-old son out with a two-way radio to communicate with the officers. Police made the child leave the residence with family members for safety.

During negotiations, around 7:00 a.m., Police heard two shots fired from an unknown location within the residence. They did not return fire.

Just after 11:00 a.m., the two older children exited the residence to the safety of Police, as Police continued the negotiation.

Indiana State Police Emergency Response Officers entered the residence around 1:00 p.m., after the suspect had fallen asleep.

Ian Long, 38, of Linton, IN was arrested and taken into custody for Intimidation. The Greene County Prosecutor will be further reviewing the investigation, and will announce further charges at a later date.

Officers removed one firearm from the residence, which will remain in Police custody under the terms of the “Jake Laird Law,” which was enacted in 2006 after the shooting of Indianapolis Police Officer Jake Laird.

The law allows officers to immediately seize firearms from emotionally unstable and or violent individuals and, with court approval, retain the firearms until further order of the responsible court.
