Possible construction on north side

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A major construction project in the works is expected to create about 100 jobs and millions of dollars coming into the Wabash Valley.

$115 million.

That's the amount of positive economic impact this project is expected to create over the next ten years.

Last July, the board of public works and Terre Haute's Department of Redevelopment classified Memorial Park, in north Terre Haute a surplus property, meaning it can be sold.

Thursday night, in a tax abatement meeting, city officials announced plans for the possibility of 21st century apartments to be built on that land.

They would serve as short term rehabilitation facilities.

A new concept, the facility will also include a library, coffee shop, and theater.

"The idea is when you drive by a mainstreet facility, you don't feel like you're driving by a healthcare facility, you'll look at it and say that looks like a hotel, it looks like a meeting area, it attracts attention and it looks different," Katz, Sapper & Miller Partner Tim Cook said.

The $10 million project will create 100 permanent positions, attract extra business from visitors and serve as a learning place for medical students, not to mention boost construction business.

The next meeting to vote on the project will be Thursday, November 8th.

If adopted, officials will approve construction next month.

If all goes according to plan, the project will begin this spring, with an estimated building time of 12 to 15 months.

Of course, we'll continue to follow the story, and bring you the latest as it becomes available.
