VERMILLION COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - At around 9:00 Wednesday morning, Indiana State Police stopped a box truck on southbound State Road 63 at County Road 1050 South for a routine food transportation safety inspection.
Police found the truck’s refrigerator unit had been shut off and further investigation found the temperature of the 20,700 eggs varied from 58 to 59.9 degrees.
Under Indiana law, the eggs are required to be no warmer than 41 degrees during transport.
The Vermillion County Health Department was contacted and health officer Larry Beard Sr. went to the scene and ordered the cargo destroyed.
The eggs were off-loaded and destroyed at a local Vermillion County landfill.
The driver of the truck, Victor L. Yagle, 46, of Rossburg, Ohio was cited for Violation of Indiana Food Transportation Law and released.
The load from Weaver Brothers Inc. of Versailes, Ohio was bound for a food distribution company in Terre Haute, Indiana.
