TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Military brass and local leaders met at the 181st Intelligence Wing Wednesday for a ribbon cutting to open the wing’s new Air Support Operations Squadron.
That's one of the new missions assigned during base re-alignment several years ago.
Officials describe the new equipment as "something out of Star Trek,” and they say it takes special qualifications to use.
Officials say the squadron itself allows an airman on the ground to control aircraft in the air.
It's being housed in one of the existing buildings at the site.
