New proposal to dispose of tires

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Vigo County's health department is working on new guidelines to keep West Nile virus numbers down.

Tuesday morning, the health department made the proposal at the Vigo County Commissioner's meeting.

It wants to work on a way to dispose of tires safely.

Tires and other rubber products are a breeding ground for mosquitoes.

Mosquitoes carry West Nile.

If approved, health officials say the ordinance would hold more people accountable.

"Most people did comply and we didn't have problems but you have those few that don't do it so this is just to make sure that everyone can comply with this rule," Vigo County Health Department Media Coordinator Sydney Elliott said.

Commissioners plan to meet again next month to discuss the proposal.

For more information, visit Vigo County Health Department's website .

If you have any further questions about how to dispose of tires, you're encouraged to call Vector control at (812) 462-3289.
