KNOX CO., Ind. (WTHI) - Teams of Indiana National Guard members have been placed on standby to aid counties around the Wabash Valley.
According to the Knox County Emergency Management Agency, ten Highway Assistance Teams (HAT) consisting of Indiana National Guard personnel have been mobilized around the state.
There are two teams each in Vincennes, Terre Haute and Evansville.
Both sets of teams are assisting with local and state law enforcement, and emergency and road crews to assist motorists stranded as a result from sliding off of the roadway.
The Highway Assistant Teams consists of four personnel and two humvees, which are used to rescue the motorists and transport them to safe shelters along the highways.
The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) will continue to plow the interstates, U.S. highways and state routes with approximately 140 trucks deployed in the Vincennes District.
The Knox County Emergency Management Agency would also stated power outages are not uncommon with the weather conditions, and that you should report to your electric utility company if you are experiencing problems.
As a safety precaution, charge cell phones, laptops and other devices now, so that if power goes out, you will have a maximum charge on the devices.
Be sure to have food and water for three days, a battery operated or hand-crank hazard radio, flashlights, extra batteries, extra blankets and extra clothing.
