TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Terre Haute continues to make the cut in hosting national events. Events bringing in big business from across the country.
When you think of Terre Haute you probably think of Larry Bird, but the city is also becoming well known as a place to host national events.
"The more you do the more you're deemed capable," Terre Haute Convention and Vistior's Bureau President Dave Patterson said. "It's been an attempt to garner larger events."
For the first time Terre Haute is the host for the ASA Northern National softball championship. A championship with 850 young girls from 7 different states.
Local facilities like the Miss Softball America complex in Terre Haute are opening up the playing field for national events. The softball complex added lights, trees, new fencing, and even new dug outs to make the sale happen.
"We kind of established ourselves as a facility where we can handle this type of an event," MSA board member Mike Telezyn said.
From the NCAA Track and Field championships at Rose Hulman, the National Intercollegiate Flying Association event at the Terre Haute International Airport to The NCAA Cross Country championship at Indiana State University; it's all happening right here in Terre Haute.
National events bringing in money to the facilities, the hotels, and the restaurants.
In fact the 3,000 people for the softball event are each spending an average of $150 a day. You multiply that by 5 days and you're looking at more than $2 million.
"The further they come from the more likely they're to spend the night," Patterson said. "So seeking out events that are multiple, days overnights involved, a lot of meals that's where you get huge community impact."
A community hitting big nationally and scoring big at home.
