TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Two local Red Cross volunteers head out to help with Hurricane Earl.

Richard and Janet Atkins loaded up an Emergency Response Vehicle Wednesday afternoon.

They left around 5:00 p.m. for a Red Cross staging area in Massachusetts.

They will be providing food and clean up assistance to those affected by the storm.

They could be gone up to three weeks.

Richard said they are leaving early in hopes of beating the storm so they can provide the best assistance.

"It's important to be there so if it does come ashore and they have major problems you can get food to the people who need food in a timely manner," said Richard Atkins.

Richard said this is the first national event he and his wife are helping with.

They have helped with many local events in the years they have been volunteering.
