TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - With the holidays approaching, many food banks are asking for help from the public.
During the next couple months, the demand for help is higher than usual.
"Unfortunately, a lot of people depend on us during the holidays," Tom Kuhl of Catholic Charities said.
Catholic Charities serves 100 pantries, feeding 132,000 people each year.
A family eats about 50 pounds of food during the average week and to feed the seven counties they serve, Catholic Charities would need 4.5 million pounds of food each year.
Recently, they've been about two million pounds shy of that.
"We're really low and depending on a lot of donations,” Kuhl said.
WTHI teams up with other local groups each year for the "Share Your Thanksgiving" event. It's a collection the food bank relies on to keep them going through more than just the holidays.
"We all know the holidays are important. We all think of food during the holidays," Kuhl said.
This year, food pantries hope you think of one another when you think of the holidays.
"Hunger is right next door. It's not just a million miles away. It’s you’re neighbor"
If you’d like to donate, you can drop off all types of food, as well as monetary donations, to the Terre Haute Catholic Charities Foodbank at 1356 Locust Street in Terre Haute.
