Line outside store for ammunition

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - House Democrats unveiled a proposal Thursday they say will help combat gun violence.

This proposal includes a bid to ban assault weapons.

But in light of the most recent gun debate, once again, stores carrying weapons and ammunition have been flush with sales.

One store in the Wabash Valley saw an ammo rush Thursday.

Gander Mountain in Terre Haute saw a influx of customers Thursday morning.

There was a line outside of the store Thursday morning. Gander Mountain was over a dozen people deep waiting for the doors to open.

One gun owner said he was there bright and early to buy ammo.

But he was also there because of the second amendment.

"I tell you, a lot of people here are the same way, defend our house and our rights. And I think the government is just stepping in just a little too much,” said Thomas Clark.

As a retired correctional officer, Clark says he's worried about defending himself and his home from criminals. He thinks it's his right to protect himself.

As an avid hunter as well, Clark thinks a little gun respect goes a long way.

"I have no idea what they’re going to do or push through. Like I said, I’ll be ready for whatever comes around,” said Clark.

A group of bipartisan senators wants to expand access to mental health professionals.

At this point, the only gun-related proposal with bipartisan support is the one requiring background checks for all gun buyers.
