Law firm to provide safe rides home program

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A local law firm is doing its part to keep you and others in the Terre Haute area, safer during your New Year’s celebrations.

December 31 is one of most dangerous nights to hit the road; a night dedicated to celebrating the New Year but the celebration all goes to waste if your loved ones never make it home.

Lt. Brian Dehart says, "None of us want to go knock on a door at 3 in the morning and have to tell a loved one they've lost someone."

On New Years Eve in 2011, Indiana State Police responded to 658 accidents across the Hoosier state.

That's why Terre Haute law firm Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos & Newlin pays a cab service to keep drunk drivers off the streets.

Steve Fleschner says, "Number one we care about the community, number two we don't want anyone to get arrested and number three and most importantly we don't want anyone to get hurt."

Fleschner has seen first hand how a drunk driver can destroy a family.

"Its horrible.  I've never gone through it. I hope I never go through it personally but yes we represent a lot of people who have lost spouses or children, children are the worst and people never get over it,” said Fleschner.

Dehart says, "You don't want to live with that if you hurt someone, kill someone. You don't want to hurt someone; you don't want to live with that the rest of your life because you will."

Police ask before people head out the door to celebrate have a plan of action. Make sure to either have a designated driver or the number to a cab or just stay at the party.

Fleschner, Stark, Tanoos and Newlin Law Firm will be offering the Safe and Sober Free Cab Ride Home Program to help you make smarter decisions about drinking and driving.

The program will be available in Terre Haute and West Terre Haute area, and will provide free cab rides home for those in need.

The program will start around 8:00 p.m. Monday night and be available until 3:00 a.m. Tuesday morning.

To request a ride home, call Yellow Cab of Terre Haute at (812) 478-5000 and tell them Fleschner Law is paying for your safe ride home.

This is important to note:

  • The cab driver will only take you home, not to another bar.

Be safe and happy New Year Wabash Valley!
