TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - For the last couple of weeks, Sports 10 has been looking into reports that Indiana State baseball assistant coach Tyler Herbst had been arrested.
Because this story impacts both the image of coach Herbst and the ISU baseball program, we wanted to make sure we had gathered all the information possible before reporting the story.
On July 29th, 2010, Coach Herbst was one of five people arrested as part of a prostitution sting in Downers Grove, Illinois, which is just west of Chicago.
According to the TribLocal, which is the Downers Grove newspaper, the prostitution investigation conducted by the Downers Grove Police officers used adult-oriented ads posted to a Web site.
Police said undercover detectives posed as prostitutes or potential patrons in an attempt to document offers to exchange money for sex.
Herbst was arrested July 29th and charged with misdemeanor solicitation of a sex act and released on $100 bail.
He's accused of offering to pay an undercover officer $200 to $250 for sex at a motel.
Sports 10 has learned Herbst was on a recruiting trip when he was arrested.
ISU head baseball coach Rick Heller tells us that Herbst is still on the ISU baseball staff.
Coach Herbst has been the recruiting coordinator and pitching coach with the Sycamores baseball program for two years.
During that time, he has helped three ISU pitchers get selected in the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.
Herbst's misdemeanor case is still on going in court, a resolution could take a couple of months.
When we contacted the Indiana State athletic department about the arrest, Sports 10 was told they had no comment.
