IN trying program to fund pre-school

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Hoosier state could soon be paying for your child to go to preschool.

Right now, lawmakers in Indianapolis are trying out a pilot program. It's House Bill 1004 . Over the next two years, they'll give out $14 million to lower income students in certain districts. That money will fund their preschool courses.

It could be the first step in funding pre-schools across the state. Vigo County Schools said they're excited about the program. They said it's important to get children learning at an early age.

"This past year they added the full day kindergarten funding and that's been a great boon to all of our families, and the next step is to look at what we can do for preschool kids so that we have them even earlier," Christi Fenton from the Vigo County School Corporation said.

Currently, Vigo County uses pre-school programs at certain Title 1 schools and for some special needs children.
