TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Scott Saunders came off the streets four months ago.
"I had no place to go, and I got into here, I'm just lucky I got into here," Saunders said.
He is one of many that gather at the Light House Mission (LHM) to get out of the hot temperatures.
"When May rolled around, they started coming, more and more people coming in," he said.
He said before relying on LHM, it was all about surviving.
Saunders reflected, "There was one day I just slept next to a dumpster and some cardboard boxes and just got up, and just walked around and wandered around until I figured out where I was going to have to head to try to get some food."
News 10 visited one of the spots where Scott said many homeless people go.
We found blankets, a chair, and many empty cups.
According to Scott's former life, these folks are out rummaging for food and water to survive, and they'll be back here tonight when it's cool to sleep.
"They go day by day, just like that, go from one place to the next place to the next place. It's just a struggle to survive most of the time," said Saunders.
He said while it can be dangerous, most people mean well.
"Most of them are decent people. And they're just down on their luck and just need a helping hand here and there," stated Saunders.
One of those "decent people" Saunders mentioned are the reason Scott now works and lives at Light House Mission.
It's a difficult time for those without shelter.
Saunders mentioned to not be afraid to ask for help.
"They don't need to be too proud to get help, because the doors are open."
The Light House Mission said many folks come in that aren't homeless.
In many cases, they just need some assistance.
