Historical Marker dedicated to Wabash Valley native

ROCKVILLE, Ind. (WTHI) - A Wabash Valley native, Juliet Strauss' idealized writings about simple rural life during the 1800s sparked some attention.

"To become nationally known, writing about every day life in Rockville, was pretty significant too.  It gives us a window of how things were here in her time," Parke County Historian Randy Wright said.

Strauss first put her pen to work for the Rockville Tribune, with her husband, who was the editor at the time.

When the publisher of Indianapolis News noticed her work, she continued her writings for them.

Her last publications were in Ladies Home Journal, reaching over one million readers worldwide.

Her straightforward, strong willed publications aren't her only claim to fame.

She helped save the land that you know as Turkey Run State Park, where a statue now stands in her name.

Strauss' grandson remembers the family outings here.

"People kept talking about that, kind of making a fuss we never, I wasn't sure that everybody's mother didn't have statues in their remembrance, it was just one of those things that was always there," Strauss' great grandson Andy Snowden said.

Strauss gave Rockville a place in history.

Now, thanks to the community's efforts, a plaque sits outside Strauss' former house, so that her work will never be forgotten.

The Rockville community raised $2,000 for the historical marker, which was two years in the making.

Since Strauss' death, a book was written about her life, called The Country Contributor.
