Health fair caters to community

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Loads of people in Terre Haute visited the annual community health fair Sunday.  It’s a chance to help everyone learn more about improving their health.

It was an opportunity for the community and different health organizations to meet in one place.

Health organizations gave out information as well as free health screenings to the public.

Coordinators say the event caters to people who don't have insurance or are in-between primary care physicians.

They also understand some just don't have the money to afford taking a proactive approach to their health.

Officials feel everyone should have the opportunity to prevent serious illnesses.

The screenings done at the fair are usually preventative ones.

They also offer help for people with borderline health issues and give ways to have heart-healthy diets, or to keep adult diabetes at bay.

“Here in Terre Haute, we know there’s a huge group of people who don’t have primary care physicians. Rising medical costs...everyone has their reason. And so, we just want to pass that up and just let people take advantage of the opportunity,” said Becca Davis, second year medical student.

Students at the Indiana University School of Medicine in Terre Haute helped coordinate today's event.

Screenings Sunday included weight management, blood pressure and diabetes.

There were also children's activities to get community kids excited about health and wellness.

The health fair started in 2005. Organizers say it continues to grow each year.
