TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - President Obama took steps Wednesday to prevent tragedies like the mass killings in Connecticut.
He demands change with a new White House push to reduce gun violence.
The plan could include bringing back a ban on assault weapons as well as other gun restrictions.
As a result, firearm sales reach a new all-time high across the nation.
Top Guns in Terre Haute has been wall-to-wall full of customers.
"I just know how important it is for my husband to own guns and be able to protect himself and his family so I figured I better come and get what I can before it's gone," Customer Rachel McCarty said.
Within the last week, the store has seen a 60 percent increase in gun sales, a record high.
Now, it sells between 75 and 100 firearms per day.
Assault weapons are the highest priced items.
"This might be the last chance in our lifetime to be able to purchase these types of weapons before they're outlawed," Top Guns Manager Don Sabla said.
While News 10 was there, the store only had a handful left.
If you want one, you may have to pay more.
"Everything nationwide from our distributors is completely out of stock. We cannot purchase any firearms. There is absolutely nothing available for us to be able to get right no. We we have in stock is all we're able to get and we're quickly depleting our stores," Sabla said.
Employees believe the shooting in Connecticut, Obama's efforts and even recent local news are responsible.
"Quite a few people from Sullivan area purchased a firearm for the first time because they're in fear of protecting themselves and their families," he said.
President Obama's specific plans will be announced Friday.
