Gov. Daniels looks at his future

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (WTHI) - December is Governor Mitch Daniels last full month as governor. After that he moves on as president of Purdue University. In his new venture, the governor stands to make almost three times the salary he had as governor.

Later this month News 10 will be taking a look back at the past 8 years under Governor Mitch Daniels. Looking at how those years affected Indiana and the future of the state.
    
But right now we begin at the end, with what's next for the outgoing governor.

"I came very close at least twice to saying gosh thanks for the suggestion but I just don't think (we’re) a good fit for each other,” Daniels said of his future.
    
For most of 2012, the speculation around the statehouse centered on a presidential run by Governor Daniels.

"I think we all know by now I wasn't lying it's a good fit for either of us,” Daniels explained.
    
But, Daniels did accept a presidential bid, just not in a political realm.
    
His new title; President, of Purdue University.

"I tell you Purdue is an outstanding place with a chance to be greater. It means a lot to this state,” he said.
    
Here's what you may not know:
    
As governor, Daniels brought in around 107,800 dollars a year. State records show his predecessor, former Purdue President, France Cordova made 475,000 dollars this year.
    
The Purdue board says they plan to offer Daniels a similar salary. But for Mitch he says it's a continuing of his service to the state.

"This is a chance to go be useful maybe, if you can serve the place well and help it continue to improve,” he ended saying.
    
    
Daniels' opponents say he appointed the board members who picked him to be Purdue's president. That board voted unanimously in July to hire Daniels.
