VINCENNES, Ind. (WTHI) - A nightmare fire hits downtown Vincennes.
For years, fire officials have worried about what would happen if a major blaze hit in the Main Street area of the city.
The fire was reported around 9 as heavy smoke coming out of the Gimbel Building.
Crews arriving on the scene soon were dealing with flames roaring out of all of the doors and windows and then the fire went through the roof.
After that it began to spread to an adjoining building destroying several businesses located there.
The Vincennes Fire Department quickly called out all of its firefighters, but they needed more help to get the blaze under control.
Vincennes Township and other neighboring Knox County Departments were called in.
Fire Departments from Princeton, Washington, and Lawrenceville also brought in aerial trucks to get water on the top of the downtown buildings.
There were no immediate reports of injuries.
Firefighters are expected to remain on the scene through the night trying to contain the blaze.
