One dead from accident on Interstate 70

PUTNAM COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - A rainy Sunday morning left slick roads on Interstate 70.

Authorities believe that is what partly lead to an accident that took one Indiana man's life.

"At the time, it was coming down really hard," Putnam County Sheriff's Department Chief Deputy Tom Helmer said.

They said the driver, could have also been asleep at the wheel at the time of the crash.

Putnam County Sheriff and Cloverdale Fire Departments arrived on the scene of the crash just before 10 a.m.

It happened at mile-marker 42 near Greencastle.

The driver of a 2004 Mazda Triune, 42-year-old Michael Sullivan, of Franklin, Indiana was driving westbound, when he crossed the median and was struck by a 2002 Chevrolet Monte Carlo driving eastbound.

The driver of the Monte Carlo, Willie Simmons and his son, Keith Simmons were sent to Methodist hospital in Indianapolis, both with lower leg and hip injuries.

The accident caused quite the mess of traffic on the highway.

"Probably going on an hour. So, it's been a while," Driver George Otis said.

Accidents likes this are just one more reminder to be careful and slow down.

"People turn on your headlights. You might be able to see where you're going but let other people see you. It would have made a difference out here, but you need to slow down because when it's heavy rain like that, water pools," Chief Deputy Helmer said.

Police said victims currently at Methodist Hospital did not suffer life threatening injuries.
