Exercising outside? Know the warnings

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - You're starting to see them more and more. Like bears coming out of hibernation, runners are slowly starting to appear.

"People kind of have that cabin fever," said Larry Thompson, a trainer at Anytime Fitness, "you're kinda inside all winter, ready to get out and get some sunshine, so you see more people walking and running; maybe hitting the parks just to get fresh air."

However, if you're not careful, that healthy habit could have you feeling under the weather.

While the temperatures are rising, they can be deceiving.

After a few weeks in the teens, a day in the 30's or 40's feels like paradise; but you still need to layer up if you're going out.

That means long sleeves, sweatshirts, and even a hat and gloves.

"It's real important because you want to have something that's a barrier between you and the wind," said Larry, "and obviously just keeping your body covered and consistent, keeping that consistent temperature is very important."

One thing many people overlook could be the most important; stretching.

Not warming up properly could leave you with a major injury.

"If you think about a rubber band being inside of a freezer, you take it out and try to stretch it, it's more than likely going to snap, and your muscles can kind of be that way too," said Larry.

If you're out for a run, it's also important to stay hydrated. This includes before and after, and throughout the day. Everyone should drink 64 ounces of water every day.

Don't let this deter you from going out for a walk or run. On a warm day, a run outside would have felt amazing; you just need get your body ready for the transition.

Plus, if you're struggling with that resolution, it could be a nice change of scenery.
