TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - A man accused of murder is formally charged in court. Enzert Lewis was being held in the Vigo County Jail on a charge of “violating a no contact order" for his now deceased wife Allyson Elmi-Lewis.
But, Wednesday morning in court three more charges, including murder, were added.
Tuesday the Vigo County sheriff and prosecutor revealed they would be formally charging Mr. Lewis with murder.
In the probable cause warrant, the Vigo County prosecutor outlined the witness testimony that lead to the murder charges.
Witnesses close to Mr. Lewis said they knew he was cleaning his red 1996 mercury sable using bleach and when searched, detectives found blood evidence inside the vehicle.
Other witnesses close to Mr. Lewis, including a family member, say when pressed Mr. Lewis confessed to beating his estranged wife.
The most condemning testimony may be from a cousin of Lewis’s. This person alleges that Lewis said he had done it and "Only God and he knew."
Still more bizarre came a twist during the hearing when it was revealed that Enzert Lewis is in fact a citizen of Jamaica.
"Under international law, if the defendant requests that his embassy be contacted,” Prosecutor Terry Modesitt said, “then we are supposed to go ahead and contact them and advise them that's he being held and that charges have been filed against him.”
Lewis did request that the Jamaican embassy be contacted.
