Elementary school students celebrates holidays like pioneers

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Local students are celebrating Christmas in a really old-fashioned way: like pioneers.

Students at Hoosier Prairie Elementary School in Terre Haute participated in a simulated event to re-portray what life was like during the early pioneer days in North America.

4th Graders dressed up like pioneers and learned how they would have celebrated the most wonderful time of the year.

They had a class in a log cabin, made cookies and, of course, square danced to bring out the Christmas spirit.

Teachers said it’s important for children to learn about celebrations from all cultures and time periods.

“This is a great opportunity for us to take all of the things we have learned about pioneers in our history books and bring them to life,” said Jodi Fish, Hoosier Prairie Elementary teacher.

According to students, the highlight of the event was the square dancing.
