VIGO CO., Ind. (WTHI) - Due to extremely dry, near-drought conditions, the Vigo County Commissioners are enacting a County-Wide Burn Ban

This ban went into effect on Friday, August 17, and will be in effect until noon on Friday, August 31.

According to the release on the burn ban, the following activities are prohibited in Vigo Co.:

  1. Campfires and other recreational fires unless enclosed in a fire ring, with dimensions of 23 inches in diameter and 10 inches high or higher;
  2. The burning of debris, such as timber, vegetation, including such debris that results from building construction activities;
  3. Open burning of any kind using conventional fuel such as wood, or other combustible matter.

Charcoal from permitted grills shall not be removed from the grills until the charcoal has been thoroughly extinguished.

Vigo County Emergency Management said they hope the public will adhere to the burn ban. They call it a matter of safety.

"We're being proactive. We don't really want to you know be hard on citizens, but we also want them to know that we want to keep them safe as well," Dr. Dorene Hojnicki of the Vigo County EMA said.
