TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - The Vigo County Sheriff finished his proposal for new safety standards at county schools. The 10 new special deputies Sheriff Greg Ewing's proposal calls for requires certain funds in order to carry out; and it looks like the next few months will be spent hammering out where to get those funds.
"The collaboration that we have with the agencies involved and our elected officials, I don't think this takes place in too many spots but it happens here pretty often,” Vigo County Superintendent of schools Danny Tanoos said.
But with that added safety, comes a price tag. It's up to those lawmakers to come up with the funds to do that.
"There’s some talk of some funding coming from the federal or state level and hopefully that will come through and help support this,” Vigo County Councilman Bill Thomas said.
At the county level, Vigo County will have to raise 135,000 dollars to reach the funds needed for Sheriff Greg Ewing’s plan. But if that money can't come from the state it will be up to the county to find it.
We spoke with Vigo County commissioner Brad Anderson to find out what role the county plays.
He says that county council will take the proposal before a committee and then before the full council for a vote in March.
"Right now we'll look at proposals and see how its done,” Anderson said. “The county council will really have to make that decision on the funding and see what we might have to cut or take from."
But it's a cost that everyone from the sheriff’s office over to the county lawmakers feel is necessary for safety.
"We're concerned we never want anything to happen to our kids and schools,” Anderson said.” (They are all) very important to us and we don’t want anyone getting hurt and we are going to see what we can do to help out.”
