BRAZIL, Ind. (WTHI) - This week's snow storm is creating problems not just for drivers, but for the road themselves.
In some Wabash Valley cities they don't have the funds to repair that damage. But, the city of Brazil is taking some steps to create a smoother ride for their residents.
Potholes and cracks. They are road problems caused by winter weather and wear and tear. In Brazil they wreak havoc on cars.
"You know our roads are in disrepair and that's been going on for sometime and our challenge is to find a way to address that,” Brazil Mayor Brian Wyndham said.
Funds are another problem. The city of Brazil doesn't have money right now to fix all the streets. So their only solution for now is a cold patch and its only temporary solution.
But, their streets of disaster may finally see a makeover this year.
Thanks to funds coming in from the Wheel Tax; which is a direct cost added on to every car and truck when license tags are renewed in Clay County.
"That's being collected this year and we should be able to do some resurfacing this year,” Wyndham explained.
Wyndham estimates that the tax should bring in around 75,000 dollars this year. Which you've guessed is probably not enough to resurface all of the streets.
So he's looking to the legislature for that extra help.
"There's some legislation up there now that's being done to help put money back into the local streets and roads funding," he said.
But, regardless Wyndham said he and the city are moving forward on moving these potholes out for good.
"That’s our responsibility to do that. That's what our biggest issue is here in the city. People want to see a systematic road repair. "
