BRAZIL, Ind. (WTHI) - Lucas will never forget the day he first got Skeeter.

"If Mom couldn't find me, I'd just be sleeping in his dog box," Lucas Cooksey said.

Last Christmas, Skeeter went missing.

"We figured he'd just come back and we looked around for him and we went around the neighborhood but when he didn't come back, that's when it kinda got serious," Cooksey said.

Months went by.

"It was hard, you lay in bed at night, wondering where he's at, if he's okay," Molly Ascheman said.

Lucas says he never stopped looking.

"I've had him since I was like 8 years old, so I wasn't going to give up, Cooksey said.

Last week, six months from when he first went missing, they finally received the news they were hoping for.

Molly was on Clay County Humane Society's Facebook page.

"I was looking through the pictures and I saw him. At first, I was like there's no way that could be him because people had told me you know, if he's there for a while that he'd be put to sleep," Ascheman said.

"It wasn't ten minutes after I posted all the dogs that we had on here, that I had received a message back from Molly saying I think that's our dog," Clay County Humane Society Volunteer Stacy Dotson said.

Molly called Lucas, and he raced to the humane society.

"I got a text, it's him," Ascheman said.

"I just walked in the gate, and he just flipped out," Cooksey said.

It's a happy ending, after months of unanswered questions.

"The shelter struggles every day to stay open, so but things like this keep us positive and keep us going," Dotson said.

"I'm just happy he's home," Cooksey said.

Skeeter is heart worm positive.
