RILEY, Ind. (WTHI) - Indiana American Water has issued a boil water advisory for customers in the town of Riley after a technical issue allowed an elevated storage tank to drain overnight, causing pressure in the system to drop below 20 pounds per square inch for a period of time. The tank has since been refilled and service has been restored to all Riley customers.
Customers in the affected area are advised to drink and cook with tap water only after boiling it for approximately one minute. Tap water can be used for washing/bathing.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality water in the event water pressure drops below 20 pounds per square inch (psi) in any part of a distribution system. According to company officials, boil advisories are issued as a precaution with a customer's best interests in mind. It's possible, but unlikely, bacteria could enter the water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.
During the boil water advisory, the water company performs a series of tests to determine if the water meets regulatory drinking water standards. The boil advisory will expire at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, September 25, assuming sample results taken from several sites within the affected area show no bacterial contamination is present. Any additional information regarding this boil advisory will be shared with residents through local media outlets.
Indiana American Water operates the Riley water utility on behalf of the town. The town serves a total of approximately 630 customers in the area.
Customers can call the Indiana American Water Customer Service Center at 1-800-492-8373 for the latest updates.
