VIGO COUNTY, Ind. (WTHI) - The man's body that was found Sunday afternoon has no obvious signs of trauma. But investigators still do not know who he is.
The partially decomposed body was discovered in northeastern Vigo County near the Clay County line. The medical examiner was unable to make a positive identification on the body. It had been in the elements too long to make an identification from fingerprints.
The body was found by a man surveying some property near Grotto Road and Miami Gardens Street. The emergency call came in about 1:41 Sunday afternoon.
Vigo County Coroner Dr. Roland Kohr said the body is a of a middle aged white male. Kohr found no serious or traumatic injuries that could have killed the man. He hopes to get toxicology results back in a couple weeks that will reveal the cause of death.
The body was found less than a mile from where Charles Raymond Chumley Jr., 30, disappeared. Chumley was last seen in early December when he was dropped off by his wife on Miami Gardens Street.
Indiana State police investigators said there are some similarities but are not speculating on the identity of the body.
Kohr said the condition of the body is consistent with someone who has been outdoors for 3 to 4 months, which would match Chumley's timeline.
Kohr is waiting on dental records to make an identification which are due tomorrow. If that does not work, he will have to wait on DNA to identify the body which would take weeks.
