Bad checks could cost cashier money

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Grocery store cashier Sabrena Cooper admits she trusted that two commercial checks a man and woman used to pay for their groceries last Monday were legit; but she never dreamed the bogus checks would end up costing her money from her own wallet.

"Those checks that came through, they ended up being fake or whatever, but there's no way of me telling that they're fake," Sabrena told News 10 on Friday.

The 18-year-old early graduate from West Vigo High School, with almost a straight-A average, quit her job at Page's IGA in North Terre Haute this week, after being pressured to reimburse the grocery store the roughly $134 the business lost between the two fraudulent checks Sabrena accepted.

Despite her claims of ignorance, the owner of Page's IGA says it's store policy for all checks to be immediately processed through TeleCheck. Ron Page explained Sabrena would've known immediately that the checks were bogus.

Sabrena told News 10 she closely inspected both checks and found evidence, including what appeared to be a watermark, the checks were legit.

Sabrena Cooper is currently looking for a job, and argues she should not be held accountable for the $134 bogus check balance.

Ron Page, on the other hand, said he has every intention of holding Sabrena's final paycheck, then billing her for the remaining balance.
