TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Several groups turned out to support Terre Haute police officers Friday, as part of the city’s Officer Appreciation Day.
The Terre Haute Chamber of Commerce, along with several restaurants, offered a free lunch of hot dogs, drinks and cookies for officers behind the Terre Haute Police Department building.
Across the street, members of Living Word Ministries dedicated an 8-foot metal cross on their building to fallen officer Brent Long.
The cross, which was donated by Dennis and Karen Morris of Brazil, Ind. and was put up by Bob’s Tree Service, is mounted on the church’s façade.
Associate Pastor Larry Reck said members of the church had been looking for a way to honor Officer Long.
“Being across from the police station and seeing his car here for a number of weeks, we felt that, being part of the community like the church is, we should honor him in some way,” Reck said.
Reck also said the cross will remain in place as long as the church does.
