TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - One of the city's largest public gathering kicked off with a proclamation from Mayor Duke Bennett.

Thursday, Sam's Club presented organizers a check for $250 dollars for expenses.

Next Tuesday, National Night Out will be held at Fairbanks Park in Terre Haute. Each year this event grows, allowing the community to come together.

Law Enforcement and public safety personnel are there interacting with visitors. There are demonstrations, food, places for kids to play and giveaways.

"This is a chance for, especially for young people. I think it's really important for them to interact and get to know and feel comfortable with the police officers. Whether they're reporting something or they've been a victim, or whatever the situation is," Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett said.

Last year, Terre Haute ranked in the top ten among cities of its size. This year they hope to increase their ranking even more.

Donations and help are still encouraged to keep this event free for everyone.
