TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Students all across the Wabash Valley are aware they need to take care of themselves in the extreme heat, especially outside.
The sun beats down on the marching band at Terre Haute South High School during their annual "band camp" to get ready for football games and competitions.
Their competition this week is the scorching heat.
"If you don't drink enough water, you feel dizzy. It happens to one or two people a year, but not everybody. We try to make sure everyone is feeling OK," Sophomore Autumn Long said.
While a good portion of their day is spent outside practicing in the heat, the students get to practice inside too. That gives them and the instructors a chance to cool off.
"It is very amazing, it's a big change and it feels really good. Yesterday we had almost two people pass out, so it's amazing inside," Color Guard member Ashley Hargis said.
After the students wrap up, the instructors say it's important they take care of themselves at night so they are ready for the next day.
"No sugar, no caffeine, no sugar beverages, watch what you eat, drink lots of water. We want everyone to drink a glass of water when they get home. Be well rested. Watch what they eat for breakfast," Band Director, Tim Murphy said.
The instructors hope that with those guidelines, the students can beat the heat in practice the next day.
