Burn survivor raises money for camp

BRAZIL, Ind. (WTHI) - May 2nd marks one year since Carmen Schleppy's accident. A first-grader at the time, she suffered third-and fourth-degree burns on 60 percent of her body, after her skirt caught fire near her living room fireplace.

Now, First Baptist Church in Brazil, along with the Schleppy family hopes to raise money for Hoosier Burn Camp.

HBC is run entirely from donations and fundraisers, making it a free experience for burn survivors. The camp's purpose is to help them improve their self-esteem and self-image by being at a place where they can feel comfortable doing everyday activities without being looked at as "different" due to the scarring and deformities the burns may have caused. The week-long camp is for burn survivors, ages 8-18.

This will be Carmen's first year at HBC.

They're also asking for motorcycle escorts to take Carmen to Brookston, Indiana, for Hoosier Burn Camp's event, Stop Drop and Roll Ride. On Monday, May 28, they're meeting at the church located at 413 Walnut Street, and leaving at 9 a.m.

First Baptist Church would like to give T-shirts to each of the children at the HBC. Reverend Mark Thompson said they are looking for T-shirt sponsors at a cost of $50.
