2012 review of police agencies

TERRE HAUTE, Ind. (WTHI) - Local law enforcement agencies work around the clock to protect the community.

As the Terre Haute community continues to move forward into 2013, News 10 takes a look back at 2012’s police progress.

The Vigo County Sheriff's Department and Terre Haute City Police had a successful year in 2012; from finding ways to save money to solving the Allyson Lewis murder mystery.

Sheriff Greg Ewing says, "Bringing that to an arrest was an absolute good job on the behalf of the detectives and deputies that worked on that."

Sheriff's Ewing's deputies also created the group called VCAT or Vigo County Criminal Activity Task Force.

A group dedicated to helping curb crime throughout different areas in the county as crime fluctuates.

"And I'll tell you where the success with that comes; it really helped build the moral within the department. Its something they don't get to do on an everyday basis and this group has defined themselves and has been successful in the times it ran,” said Ewing.

As for city officers, one major success for them and the community was the turn out they had with the Citizens Academy.

A program that allows everyday people, get a taste of what officers do.

Chief John Plasse also recalled a trip that was not welcomed but surely honored. The Fallen Officers Memorial, a trip dedicated to fallen officer Brent Long.

"I’m sure they would rather not go and have Brent back here but it was good for the amount of guys and gals that went to show our respects for Brent and to be here when they put Brent’s name on the wall,” said Plasse.

As for 2013, both Chief Plasse and Sheriff Ewing look for ways to improve their departments and ways to protect our schools.

"That’s going to be my first step, very first part of this year is getting officers out in the county so that response times will be greatly reduced,” said Ewing.

Always improving, forever evolving, all to make the community that much safer.
