WASHINGTON, Ind. (WTHI) - Washington Indiana has around 1,000 street lights. The annual bill for them runs more than $120,000.

That has prompted Washington to join with its power supplier, Indiana Municipal Power Agency, to go after a demonstration grant to install energy saving LED street lights.

The LED lights would save the city 50 percent on its energy costs.

"We're reducing our consumption," said Mayor Larry Haag. "In doing so we're reducing our pollution, reducing the amount of expense we're paying for that electricity."

The city hopes to take the energy savings from the demonstration lights and eventually convert the rest of its street lights to the energy saving LED system.
